Marquez conceptualised the idea of Macondo based on the place where he spent his childhood.
Macondo seems to have destructive qualities, it is doomed to be destroyed in the future and Melquiades is the only one who knew about it. The parchments which he wrote and which was tried to be deciphered by many members of buendia family, was the only source of the foretelling of the future of the town of Macondo.
